One letter describes Battle of Jenkins Ferry in which the Iowa unit stormed a Confederate battery along with troops from 2nd Kansas Infantry (later 83rd United States Colored Troops.)

The following is a transcription of the letter: "You will at once proceed to the residence of Mr. Mussey residing within these lines & search his house and arrest himself and wife or any others whom you may have just cause to suspect of conveying information to the enemy".
